I wasn't very convinced by Atonement myself, book or movie. It didn't feel like satisfying storytelling, which I assume is really the point, but still. To make someone love a character and then utterly destroy it is rather harsh.

I was interested more than anything in the dynamics between two characters that have deeply hurt one another in different ways, but still feel the underlying stronger current of real affection to each other, and the disjointed snippets felt right, somehow.

You know, I wasn't aiming for a happy ending--I just wanted to show that they could find peace with one another even after everything that had happened. This is one of the reasons I said I wasn;t even sure if this story made sense, but I just... had to write it.
